General Braxton Bragg CSA.

James M. McPherson's reference to "the bumblers like Bragg and Pemberton and Hood who lost the West"[65] sums up the judgment of many modern historians. Bragg's shortcomings as an army commander included his unimaginative tactics, mostly his reliance on frontal assault (such as the Hornet's Nest at Shiloh, Breckinridge's assault at Stones River, and numerous instances at Chickamauga), and his lack of post-battle follow-up that turned tactical victories or draws into strategic disappointments (Perryville and Chickamauga). His sour disposition, penchant to blame others for defeat, and poor interpersonal skills undoubtedly caused him to be criticized more directly than many of his unsuccessful contemporaries. Peter Cozzens wrote about his relationship with subordinates:[66]

Even Bragg's staunchest supporters admonished him for his quick temper, general irritability, and tendency to wound innocent men with barbs thrown during his frequent fits of anger. His reluctance to praise or flatter was exceeded, we are told, only by the tenacity with which, once formed, he clung to an adverse impression of a subordinate. For such officers—and they were many in the Army of Mississippi—Bragg's removal or their transfer were the only alternatives to an unbearable existence.

— Peter Cozzens, No Better Place to Die: The Battle of Stones River

His problem is not that he has shortcomings, it is that he will not accept that he does and employ others with strengths in these areas and improve while playing to strengths.

Denial precedes disaster - Some disasters are within control and others not.

A-Titanic-Survivor-Says-the-Ship-Did-Not-Sink-Because-Of-an-Iceberg.jpg

Consider the Titanic, icebergs are a natural event. What was the planning? Ship was claimed to be unsinkable. All just denial of facts. So what about an earth impact? While not something that could be planned for, the evidence is what gets denied. The earth has an estimated 25,000 surface craters of 5 miles diameter or more. This does not count the larger accretion impacts. These energies are far beyond atomic bombs with random landings. So whatever life was present represents "survival of the survivors." Could not have anything to do with fitness. Is the logic of fossils of extinction and sudden burial. The interpretation denial disaster.

So what would a collision of a 60 mile wide comet coming from the Oort Cloud hitting earth look like?

Projectile Descriptors

Projectile Diameter 96560 meters

Projectile Density 600 kg/m3

Impact Conditions

Impact Velocity 600 km/sec

Impact Angle 45 degrees

Target Descriptors

Target Density 1500 kg/m3

Acceleration of Gravity 9.8 m/sec2

Target Type loose sand

Results

The three scaling laws yield the following transient crater diameters (note that diameters are measured at the pre-impact surface. Rim-to-rim diameters are about 1.25 times larger!)

Yield Scaling 3.37 x 106 meters

Pi Scaling (Preferred method!) 6.06 x 105 meters

Gault Scaling 1.47 x 106 meters

Crater Formation Time 2.44 x 102 seconds

Using the Pi-scaled transient crater, the final crater is a Peak-ring crater with a rim-to-rim diameter of 2.39 x 106 meters (1,485 miles).

This impactor would strike the target with an energy of 5.09 x 1028 Joules (12,200,000,000,000 MegaTons).

After 3.5 million-year hiatus, the largest comet ever discovered is headed our way | Live Science

I like the gradient nature of things. Compare the Chicxulub 6 mile diameter boulder relative power. " The Chicxulub impact event was an ~100 million megaton blast that devastated the Gulf of Mexico region. The blast generated a core of superheated plasma in excess of 10,000 degrees. Although that thermal pulse would have been relatively short-lived, a handful of minutes, it would have been lethal for nearby life."

General Nathan Bedford Forrest CSA

When he raised a regiment he went north and bought the new revolvers for his troops recognizing the advantage. He analyzed the success and failures of commanders and invented new tactics that were superior. He did not lie to himself or others, outcome spoke for him. Self made millionare before the war. He is historically dishonored for the Klan but once again it was analyzed for principles and outcome as he had honestly always done. "Forrest, who was a Freemason,[6] joined the Ku Klux Klan in 1867 (two years after its founding) and was elected its first Grand Wizard. The group was a loose collection of local factions throughout the former Confederacy that used violence and the threat of violence to maintain white control over the newly enfranchised former slaves. The Klan, with Forrest at the lead, suppressed voting rights of blacks in the South through violence and intimidation during the elections of 1868. In 1869, Forrest expressed disillusionment with the lack of discipline in the white supremacist terrorist group across the South[7] and issued a letter ordering the dissolution of the Ku Klux Klan as well as the destruction of its costumes; he then withdrew from the organization.[8] In the last years of his life, Forrest insisted he had never been a member[9] and made a public speech in favor of racial harmony."

Resource Disaster - The American Civil War, a classic resource disaster in so many ways. It would have been cheaper to buy the slaves freedom. The South could never beat the North in any protracted struggle due to such a lack of resources both men and material. All Grant had to do is keep fighting to win.

Jefferson Davis is the weird case of recognizing the problems and not employing effective solutions. This is a second stage denial. He even chose a loser like Bragg as advisor.

Historian Shelby Foote said Lincoln and Forrest were the two original geniuses the Civil War produced. Lincoln managed with great effort to produce results that were also well considered. One of the great keys to success is seeing what is important and management by merit for results. While Forrest was on the losing side he is regarded as revolutionizing war and Lincoln is regarded as the greatest president. As for Bragg and Davis, well they were just losers on the losing side.

So that is 5 orders of magnitude greater explosion for one order of magnitude in size. While the earth impact accretion model is acknowledged for the Chicxulub impact and Mars has over a half million impact craters denial is what goes on regarding earth as an impact structure. Earth surface mineral diversity is a testament to impact accretion as such diversity from a tectonic process is a poor mechanism for that.
